Dr. KouIn 2002, Dr. Mengke Kou, who for 33 years has worked in the field of Chinese medicine, receiving several awards for his contributions to the profession, founded the AcuHerbal Health Clinic. 

Located in Portland Oregon, patients come from all over the country and even from abroad for treatment by this gifted physician and healer.

Dr. Kou was trained in China as a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Herbal formulas, individually prepared for each patient according to his or her specific needs, provide the foundation of Dr. Kou’s treatments. Qi Gong and acupuncture, as well as cupping and moxibustion when indicated, provide the basis of his care.

Mengke Kou descends from a family of generations of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. Growing up in a household infused with the wisdom and knowledge of Chinese medicine traditions that had been passed on from generation to generation. He started Chinese medicine training at an early age from his father and completed 8 years of medical raining, integrating Chinese and western medicine) and graduated from Chengdu University of Traditional medicine (TCM), one of the top 5 academic institutions of TCM in China.

Dr. Kou was Chief Physician at Chengdu University teaching hospital, which has over 700 beds. The associated clinic treats over 5000 patients each day.

His practice history in China includes 4 years in the cardiovascular department, 3 years in the Cardiac Care Unit, 4 years in the pulmonary wards, and 7 years in the department of oncology and hematology.

In 1997, Dr.Kou was recruited by the National College of Naturopathic Medicine to assume the positions of supervisor and staff practitioner of their Classical Chinese Medicine Clinic. Since that time, he has been serving the Portland community, as well as those who have traveled to see him for consultations and treatment.

Dr. Kou has extensive experience in the treatment of diverse acute and chronic conditions, including cancer and related blood disorders, acute viral infections, pain management, autoimmune diseases, allergies and asthma, gynecologic disorders, GI disorders such as ulcerative colitis and crohn’s disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Dr. Kou’s various research articles have been published in professional journals, and he has edited several books including TCM Emergency Medicine, and TCM Internal medicine in Clinical Practice. His published articles focus on immune disorders, blood disorders, cancers, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia. He has served on national research panels on blood disorders, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, GI disorders and digestive dysfunctions, and asthma.

Dr. Kou’s wife, Jianchun Lei, was his classmate in medical school in China, and is now his able clinical and pharmacology assistant at AcuHerbal Health Clinic. They have lived and worked together since 1982. Their teen-age daughter is a widely recognized concert pianist and violinist, and a recipient of many awards and trophies. Her goal is to become, like her parents, a doctor of Chinese and Western medicine.
